Careers & Scholarships

Many NOSB participants are interested in continuing their studies in the marine sciences after high school and eventually pursuing a career in ocean/coastal studies. Many resources exist for finding the right college or program.

For instance, in 2011 NOSB included information on Education and Career Opportunities for Students in the Finals Event Program. This information highlights some of the universities and federal agencies that support NOSB and showcases the programs that they offer specifically for students interested in marine and freshwater sciences. Please check-out this excerpt from the event program to see if any of these opportunities and college programs are of interest to you.

Options will vary depending on the area of study and the financial demands of individual programs. Because a wide variety of career opportunities exists within the ocean and coastal sciences, it is important to keep your options open and the best way to accomplish this is to avoid specializing too early.

Most careers in marine science require an undergraduate degree in science, but the specialization and focus takes place in graduate school. In order to help make a decision regarding post-secondary education, we have listed links to various sites that provide information on identifying colleges that are a good match for a student’s long-term goals, what kinds of careers are available in marine science, and where you can find more information. Deciding on the best path to your future can be a difficult decision, so learning about the wide variety of ocean and marine science undergraduate and graduate programs and numerous career opportunities can provide the tools to make an informed decision about how to take that next step.
