Professional Development

The National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) is happy to announce a special professional development opportunity for middle and high school educators nationwide. All educators are welcome to register, and NOSB coaches are highly encouraged to participate.

The free online webinar series, beginning in December 19, 2012 and running through January 2013, will focus on the 2013 NOSB competition theme, The Great Lakes: A Window into Freshwater Science. The purpose of the series is to provide teachers with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of topics related to freshwater environments, as well as science and policy issues relevant to the Great Lakes.

NOSB coaches, please note: The seminar’s guest experts will be writing questions for the 2013 NOSB competitions!

Throughout the webinar series, guest experts will cover issues related to a number of the theme’s subtopics such as an overview of the Great Lakes (history and geography), basic limnology, and current issues, including invasive species. Each of the presenters will give a one hour live webinar presentation on their current research or topic of interest, followed by a 30 minute Q&A session.

The links to each of the webinars will be posted on the NOSB website (http://www.nosb.org/professional-development/). You simply have to click and enter the Adobe Connect meeting.  If you have never used Adobe Connect, there is no software to download, but you may be prompted to update to the most recent version of Adobe Flash.  All participants logged into the meeting will be able to listen and follow along with the presentation, as well as type questions for the presenter during the live presentation. In most cases, the NOSB staff will read the questions to the presenter.  If a participant has a computer or laptop with a microphone, they may be able to ask their own question verbally.

In addition to the live interactive portion of the webinars, there will also be asynchronous elements. Each presenter may post related educational resources on the NOSB webpage (http://www.nosb.org/professional-development/), which will be available to you and your students to explore. Full video of the presentations will also be posted.

Providing a direct link between this seminar series and the NOSB competitions, each presenter will be writing questions for the NOSB competitions. Participating coaches will complete these courses with a much stronger understanding of this year’s theme and will be able to better prepare their students for the 2013 NOSB Regional and Finals Competitions.

How you can participate: All NOSB coaches that have registered a team for the 2013 competition season will be sent an invitation for the professional development series by their Regional Coordinators. Any other teachers interested in participating may email Melissa Brodeur at nosb@oceanleadership.org or simply check the NOSB website for the links to each individual webinar.  We anticipate being able to accommodate all interested parties, but participation will be on a first log-in, first serve basis as space allows in the Adobe Connect system.

Reminder: This is a special opportunity for educators and coaches of NOSB teams.  NOSB students are asked not to participate in the live webinar, but rather to watch the recorded videos and presentations once they are posted on the NOSB website.
