Topic: An Introduction to the Great Lakes
Title: A Window on the Great Lakes from Low-Earth Orbit
Description: Even from a distance of 1200 kilometers, North America’s Great Lakes stand out as a massive inland sea, our freshwater coast. This presentation will start from a broad perspective on the Great Lakes as a system tributary to the North Atlantic, narrowing to a view that includes the uniqueness of each component of the system and the historical and socioeconomic forces which have shaped present conditions. Multiple and conflicting uses which have brought about ecosystem changes ranging from water quality degradation and physical alterations to species introductions and resource manipulation will be explored. We will briefly study the basics of limnology, the science of fresh waters, and set the stage for two subsequent and more specific presentations.
Guest Expert Bio: With graduate degrees in Zoology (M.S. – 1974) and Biological Sciences (Ph.D. – 1979) from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Jim Lubner recently retired after more than thirty years of service in education and outreach for the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute. Working from the Sea Grant Field Office in southeastern Wisconsin at the Great Lakes WATER Institute in Milwaukee, Lubner served as the program’s Education Coordinator and Water Safety Specialist. Using his background and experience in the ecology of the Great Lakes, Lubner regularly taught courses and workshops on Great Lakes and ocean topics for Wisconsin educators and boaters, provided technical assistance to a diversity of Great Lakes clients, and presented informational programming on a multitude of Great Lakes topics. He was instrumental in bringing a regional competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl to Wisconsin. During his tenure with the Sea Grant Institute, he also held adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, the Geosciences Departement, and the School of Freshwater Sciences, all at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He continues to hold an Adjunct Professorship in the School of Freshwater Sciences and intends to stay active and involved in Great Lakes and ocean education.
