Title: Hurricanes: What makes them tick and how do we track them?
Guest Expert Bio: Jason Dunion specializes in satellite remote sensing of hurricanes and has led the development of several new satellite products for monitoring tropical cyclones and Saharan dust storms. He has acted as chief scientist on numerous Hurricane Hunter research missions using NOAA’s G-IV high altitude jet and P-3 Orion and has flown on over 50 hurricane flights during his time working with NOAA. During the 2006 hurricane season, he was the Director of the Hurricane Research Division’s Field Program and was responsible for coordinating their aircraft research activities. For past several years, he has mentored a number of high school, undergraduate and graduate students from various institutions, including the Air Force Academy, the University of Miami, the University of Puerto Rico, and Miami-area high schools. He has also been a Monster Storms host researcher for National Geographic’s JASON Project.
Jason earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of New Hampshire in geography and geology in 1992. For the next 4 years, he worked as a supported living coordinator in both Connecticut and Miami, while also completing his graduate school pre-requisite courses. His supporting living work involved helping people with developmental disabilities to transition out of facilities and group homes and live independently in the community. After finishing his graduate school pre-requisite courses, he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison and earned his Masters degree in Atmospheric and Oceanic Science in 1999. He is currently a PhD candidate at SUNY Albany in New York. Jason now lives in Connecticut with his wife, Paige and their children Erika (6) and Corey (3), where he works remotely as a meteorologist at the University of Miami/CIMAS and is assigned to NOAA’s Hurricane Research Division in Miami.
