Coastal and Ocean Science Training (COAST)
Internship Program

Are you a high school student interested in further exploration of the ocean sciences? If so, the Coastal and Ocean Science Training (COAST) Internship Program offered by the National Ocean Sciences Bowl is for YOU!!

No longer accepting applications for 2008. Please check back next fall for 2009 internship opportunities!

The Coastal and Ocean Science Training Internship Program (COAST) is an opportunity offered through a partnership with the National Ocean Sciences Bowl (NOSB) and The Student Conservation Association (SCA). This opportunity is part of a continuing effort by NOSB to offer additional programs to further the hands-on marine science education of its participating students. Since it’s first year in 2003, the COAST interns have worked on a variety of marine and coastal scientific research projects with SCA crew leaders and onsite researchers in Cape Cod National Seashore, Olympic National Park, and Redwood National Park.

The COAST program is an opportunity for individual challenge, meeting new friends, and trying new activities while getting hands-on experience working in one of our nation's most pristine and diverse habitats. COAST is not a summer camp experience; it is, however, a chance for students to learn about the coastal environment in ways that they never could inside of the classroom or by reading a textbook. NOSB participants are automatically qualified to apply, regardless of how their team does in competition.
Quick Facts about COAST
  • All applicants must have participated in the NOSB at some point in their high school career.
  • All applicants must be at least 15 years old.
  • Six interns are annually accepted to participate in this program.
  • 2008 Internship: June 26th - July 25th at Redwood National Park, California
  • COAST Interns will work on various marine oriented experiments and ongoing research programs. Click here for a detailed description of the 2006 COAST intern projects.
  • The program will include one "fun" weekend, some camping, and some residential living.
  • All food/lodging costs including uniforms and any specialized outdoor gear will be covered by the program.
  • A travel subsidy will be provided to assist with travel expenses to and from the internship site.
COAST Internship Description - Redwood National Park
The high school student crew will measure intertidal zone turbidity, salinity, and water temperature, and take water and sand samples along the 35-mile long coastline of Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP), determining baseline parameters during the summer low flow period of Redwood Creek an Klamath Rivers, a period with the least freshwater effect on coastal resources to use as a comparison with winter storms. Other parameters will be collected (GPS location, wind speed and direction, and wave direction) and each site will be photo documented. Water samples will be processed for suspended sediment and turbidity in the park lab. Beach composition, particle size and composition by weight, will be determined from collected sediment samples processed in the park lab. Park sites will be accessed by driving and hiking. The crew will camp within RNSP at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park adjacent to a beautiful prairie and old growth redwood forest. Environmental education activities will focus on marine ecosystems and RNSP. Activities include seining for juvenile salmonids in the Redwood Creek estuary, invasive plant removal on Gold Bluffs Beach, seabird and tidepool surveys, and visits to Humboldt State University and its Trinidad Marine Laboratory, the Arcata marsh, and the North Coast Marine Mammal Rescue Center. The two Student Conservation Association (SCA) leaders will directly supervise the crew 24/7, during marine sampling and crew down time.
